Benicia Receives $1.2 Million Federal Grant for Roadways

The city of Benicia has been awarded two federal highway safety grants worth more than $1.2 million, according to city officials.

The money will go toward two projects, the first of which is a $996,000 plan to upgrade guardrails and "end" treatments at 28 locations throughout the city.

The second is a $250,000 plan to improve two intersections - West Fifth Street and Military West along with Hastings and London drives - with pedestrian crossings, American with Disabilities Act curb ramps, rectangular rapid flash beacon systems, a media island, sidewalks and other relevant elements.

The grants, part of the Highway Safety Improvement Program, were awarded on Dec. 12 and are aimed at improving safety on all public roads. The city was among 351 applicants requesting some of the $418 million in available funding.

Designing for both projects will start in the 2019-2020 fiscal year and construction is planned for 2020-2021.
