Portions of state Highway 1 in the Big Sur area of Monterey County may preemptively close Saturday ahead of heavy rains forecast for this weekend, Caltrans announced.
The agency is advising the public to be prepared for closures at the Paul's Slide at 5 p.m. Saturday and Mud Creek at 9 a.m. Sunday in advance of a "significant storm."
"The gates on either side of Mud Creek and Paul's Slide will be key-locked," Caltrans said in an announcement. "These gates will not be manned when the highway is closed."
A final determination and announcement about the closures will be made just before the designated times.
If the closures are enacted, "No one, including emergency services or Caltrans employees, will be allowed access until a proper assessment can be made and any necessary cleanup has been completed," the agency said.
Geotechnical maintenance and construction personnel will be on-call to perform any needed inspections or cleanup work during daylight hours.
