Caltrans Uses 12,000 Pounds of Explosives to Demolish Section of Old Bay Bridge

A section of the eastern span of the Old Bay Bridge was demolished on Saturday.

Caltrans said the E-4 support pier was imploded with 12,000 pounds of explosives. The blast occurred just before 11:30 a.m. and lasted under four seconds.

Drivers in the area were advised of rolling traffic breaks, and people on the Bay Bridge said traffic was at a standstill before and during the implosion.

Caltrans first used the technique to break up one of the old bridge's foundations in November and concluded that the implosion caused minimal environmental damage.

Six foundations are slated to be destroyed next year and seven more in 2018

Caltrans live streamed the demolishment with views from Yerba Buena Island and a bike path nearby.
