Search Called Off for Surfer Reported Missing Off Rodeo Beach

The search for a surfer reported missing off Rodeo Beach in the Marin County has been called off, according to the National Park Service.

Coast Guard, National Park Service and Marin County fire crews began investigating just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday that Dan Dafoe, 40, of San Rafael was knocked unconscious in the rough waters of the beach.

Two people attempted to bring him onto the beach, but they were knocked down by a big wave and lost him, according to NPS spokeswoman Alexandra Picavet.

Dafoe was last seen in the water near a cave at the north end of the beach, Marin County Fire Department Battalion Chief Bret McTigue said.

While crews would still continue to be observant, there would no longer be a focused search for Dafoe, Picavet said.
