Exclusive: Texts From SJ Cop Who Gave Mayor Ticket

"Turning without signaling is one of my pet peeves," says officer who gave San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed a traffic citation last week.

NBC Bay Area has obtained  San Jose Police Department internal text messages sent and received by the officer who ticketed Mayor Chuck Reed last week for failing to use his turn signal.

The texts (seen here) show the officer didn't recognize the driver as the mayor.

"I didn't realize it was him until I already started filling out the ticket, " the internal text reads.

"Yeah, if it wasn't for the name of his DL [driver's license], I may not have recognized him.. Turning without signaling is one of my pet peeves so I already had the ticket done when I realized it was him..."

One SJPD employee messaged the ticketing officer saying, "Of course he [Mayor Reed] called the Chief's office already."

Another text to the ticketing officer shows some excitement over the citation reading, "Love you! You fricken rock!"

The mayor was stopped by police at 7:35 a.m. Sept. 11 while headed to City Hall. He was cited for failing to signal 100 feet before an intersection, according to the ticket obtained by NBC Bay Area.
