Horrific Crash Shuts Down El Camino Real

A fatal crash in San Mateo has shut down El Camino Real in both directions near the Hillsdale Mall.

Police were not able to provide details on the crash but said El Camino Real is shut down for several blocks around 31st Avenue.

SamTrans spokeswoman Christine Dunn said the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. and involved a taxi and another car but also affected a southbound SamTrans bus.

"The bus was not involved in the accident but the hood of the taxi flew off and lodged underneath the bus," Dunn said.

Four or five people were on the bus, which was stopped, at the time of the crash. They were not hurt, and the bus is being towed from the scene.

Sean Martin, a general manager at a TGI Friday's restaurant located at 31st Avenue and El Camino Real, was already at work when the crash happened.

"I did see earlier that there were huge flames and a car was on fire," he said. "The whole car was engulfed."

The California Highway Patrol is providing traffic control in the area.
