Hunt For Cupertino Homicide Suspect Moves South

The hunt for the man police say killed a Cupertino woman and injured her husband has moved to Southern California.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's detectives say they think Huaichang Zhao is in the Monterey Park area of Los Angeles.  They had officers canvassing that area Tuesday.

Police say Zhao killed 41-year-old Wei Wei Li in her Cupertino home Friday morning in front of the woman's children.  Li's husband Bing was also severely injured in the attack.  He remains hospitalized but is expected to survive.

Detectives say 45-year-old Fremont resident Zhao killed Li and assaulted her husband before fleeing in a white Ford pickup  truck.

The pickup truck has been recovered.

The attack was discovered at about 8:50 a.m. Friday when sheriff's  deputies responded to the 22000 block of Berry Court in unincorporated  Cupertino.

Zhao had been doing landscape work on the victims' home and the San Jose Mercury News has a source that said a landscaping tool was used as the murder weapon.

Neighbors say they heard the couple arguing with Zhao in the moments before the attack.

Authorities believe Zhao fled in his truck and then caught a ride with a friend to Los Angeles County.

We don't know the motive for going down there," Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Don Morrissey said.  "We don't believe there's family down there, but it could possibly be because  there's a large Asian population in Monterey Park."

Zhao is described as a Chinese man, about 5 feet  7 inches tall and 200 pounds.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call  Sgt. Binder or Sgt. Lera at 408-808-4500 or the anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.
