Last week, the Port of San Francisco signed off on the Pier 27 cruise terminal project — the last in a long line of proposals for the pier at the foot of Telegraph Hill.
At one point in its dilapidated life, Pier 27 was meant to be turned into a $400 million cruise terminal and office complex, then it took a turn toward becoming a mall.
And after developer Shorenstein dropped a project to build an office complex there, the pier seemed to be cursed to a lifetime of failed projects.
It was around this time last year that the latest proposal appeared for replacing the City's aging Pier 35 cruise terminal with Pier 27.
Designs are still forthcoming, but we do know that KMD and Pfau Long are on board, and a two-acre plaza will be involved.
"We want to create a vision for the city that reflects the values of San Francisco and the Bay Area, and how it serves as a portal to the world," KMD says about the project.
Construction could start in 2012 and be done by 2014.
