Winners will be given James Beard Awards medals in a ceremony on May 2 in Chicago.

Bay Area chefs and restaurants are poised to shine at the 2016 James Beard Awards, known colloquially as the "Oscars of food."

The James Beard Foundation announced the list of this year's finalists Tuesday during a press conference at San Francisco's Presidio Officers Club, naming several Bay Area chefs and restaurants in categories for the Pacific Coast as well as national awards for baking, pastry chefs, wine and service.

Among the top highlights: Liholiho Yacht Club, a Hawaiian-rooted fine restaurant in San Francisco's Lower Nob Hill, will compete for the honor of being named Best New Restaurant.

Cala, a Hayes Valley restaurant from Mexico City celebrity chef Gabriela Camara, was previously named among the semifinalists.

Michael Tusk of San Francisco's Quince and Cotogna restaurants will be vying for the title of Outstanding Chef.

Winners will be given James Beard Awards medals in a ceremony on May 2 in Chicago.
