NBC Universal, Inc.

San Francisco firefighters battled a three-alarm structure fire in the 1900 block of Washington Street Friday evening.

The fire was burning at a residence at 1927 Washington St., in the city's Pacific Heights neighborhood.

Witnesses said a barbecue started the fire in a backyard and took off.

Chris Porter said he is lucky he spotted the smoke early, checked it out and got his wife, 2-day-old baby and toddler out.

"I was in the back, it started small started creeping up side of building before I noticed it, I was on the deck I was like 'oh this is serious,'" he said.

Porter said he and others started yelling "fire" and people evacuated.

The fire department said everyone got out safely and no injuries were reported.

One of the buildings has 24 units in it so many residents were displaced.
