Santa Clara Co. Police Advise Residents to Beware of Green Dot, MoneyPak Scams

Santa Clara police are asking residents to be aware of scammers calling their homes demanding a payment for a nonexistent past due bill via a MoneyPak or Green Dot card.

Police said the scammers will pose as a city or federal employee, demanding money for a traffic ticket, income taxes, an outstanding warrant or a past due bill.

According to police, the scammer will ask a victim to go purchase a Green Dot card or a MoneyPak, telling them it is the easiest way to settle the bill.

Police said once the victim purchases the card and gives the scammer the number on the card, they can download the value of the card anywhere in the world.

Santa Clara police are advising residents that legitimate business would never ask them to pay an outstanding debt this way. Residents that have questions can call their local police department.
