A suspected carjacker crashed into multiple vehicles on Interstate 880 while being pursued in Hayward late Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The suspect was being chased by Hayward police and was taken into custody after the crash, the CHP said. Police recovered the gun used in the carjacking.
The carjacking occurred in the 3900 block of Trust Way in Hayward, and involved the brief kidnapping of a female driver, police said.
The victim suffered minor injuries, but no other injuries were reported in the carjacking or the crash, police said.
At least one lane of the freeway was blocked, the CHP said, and aerial views showed traffic backed up for miles.
Hayward police are investigating the carjacking, and the CHP is investigating the crash.
