Popular Taiwanese dumpling house Din Tai Fung will open the first Northern California location in San Jose's Valley Fair Mall.
Din Tai Fung has been the subject of rumor mongering for at least two years. One blogger speculated in 2013 that it would open in San Francisco's Embarcadero Center, presumably in the large space that's since been occupied by Singapore restaurant group Crystal Jade. But a representative from Valley Fair Mall confirmed to Eater SF Tuesday that Din Tai Fung is headed to San Jose.
The Taiwan-based chain has four locations in Southern California and two in Washington. The menu for the American locations includes standard dim sum fare as well as unusual offerings like silk squash and shrimp dumplings and pork rice steamed buns. It is chiefly known for its soup dumplings (Xiao Long Bao).
An opening date for Valley Fair has not yet been set, but is expected this year.
