Johnny Depp took to the big screen and talked like a pirate in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean."

    Ahoy, matey!

Thursday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, which means people all over the world are encouraged to say things like "Arrrgh!" and "Aye aye!"

The tradition is reportedly over a decade old and was started by two friends who talked like pirates during a racket ball game.

"By the time our hour on the court was over, we realized that lapsing into pirate lingo had made the game more fun and the time pass more quickly," original pirate guys John Baur and Mark Summers wrote on their website. "We decided then and there that what the world really needed was a new national holiday, Talk Like A Pirate Day.

Eighteen years later, people all over the world have taken to the holiday with celebrations, pub crawls, games and hashtags.  This year, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is getting in on the excitement with some free booty of their own: Talk like a pirate and get a free glazed doughnut.

For those who are struggling with the lexicon, the official Talk Like a Pirate website offers vocabulary tips and pirate games to get people into the holiday spirit. Mango Languages is offering a free course on how to speak pirate.

To celebrate pirate speak all year round, Google has a pirate language search function here. And Facebook users can choose "English (Pirate)" as their language of choice any time of the year.
