Makers of Pet Jerky Treats Agree to $6.5 Million Fund

Two of the nation's biggest makers of pet jerky agreed to create a $6.5 million fund to compensate dog owners who believe their animals were harmed by treats made in China, NBC News reported. The move is part of a settlement deal reached between the treat makers and pet owners, who have filed a class action lawsuit against the companies. If approved the settlement would also require the companies to do quality checks on treats made in China. Two weeks ago officials at the FDA said Chinese jerky had been linked to more than 1,000 dog deaths and over 4,800 complaints about animal illness, as well as sickness in three people who ate the products.
