U.S. “Lone Soldier” Gets Hero's Burial in Israel

Thousands of people were expected to turn out in Jerusalem on Wednesday morning to mourn Max Steinberg, an American “lone soldier” who died fighting in the Gaza Strip after volunteering to join Israel's military. Because they are not required to fight, "lone soldiers" are considered heroes in Israel and the ceremony was expected to be well-attended. A funeral for Nissim Sean Carmeli, 21, another American who died in the conflict, drew thousands in the Israeli port town of Haifa on Monday.
