US Soldier Mistakenly Killed Reporter: NATO

NATO-led forces confirmed on Thursday that an American soldier killed a BBC reporter during a Taliban attack in Afghanistan last July because he mistook him for a suicide bomber. The Taliban had claimed responsibility for a series of suicide attacks on July 28 that killed 19 people, but blamed Ahmed Omed Khulwak's death on government troops, the BBC reports. NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the soldier "complied with the laws of armed conflict" and "acted reasonably under the circumstances," according to MSNBC.com. BBC's David Lyon says Khpulwak was taking refuge in a bathroom and was holding up what may have been a press card. "I am hiding. Death has come," he reportedly texted to his brother.
