Syrian jets bombed rebel-held areas in eastern Syria near the border of Iraq in stepped up raids against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, the Syrian branch of hardline Islamists that have made stunning gains in northern Iraq recently and are also known as the ISIS. Syrian bombers killed and injured dozens in residential areas of the town of Muhassan, which was taken over by the ISIL as part of its larger bid to create a strict Islamic state straddling national borders. According to some rebel sources, ISIL already controls almost 70 percent of the Deir al-Zor region in Syria.
