Keith Reaser has moved into the role of the 49ers' No. 3 cornerback.
After Jimmie Ward was sidelined with a right quadriceps injury while covering a kickoff, the 49ers turned to Reaser, who played 48 snaps on defense. Reaser could be in the starting lineup when the 49ers return to action Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. Ward is scheduled to undergo an MRI examination on Monday to determine the extent of his injury.
Reaser, a fifth-round draft pick in 2014, did not play as a rookie as he rehabbed a torn ACL. He appeared in 13 games last season. Reaser has yet to make an NFL start.
Nickel back Chris Davis, who was beaten early in the game on a 34-yard pass from Russell Wilson to Doug Baldwin, played just 19 snaps in the 49ers' 37-18 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Rookie cornerback Rashard Robinson played just nine snaps, while Dontae Johnson played two snaps on defense.
