Cueto to Seek Multiple Opinions on Ailing Elbow, ‘I Don't Think You Rule Out Anything'

SAN FRANCISCO -- Bruce Bochy once again pushed back any definitive statement on Johnny Cueto's future. The reason: This situation is complicated.

Cueto will seek two to three outside opinions on his ailing right elbow, and he likely will see famed orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. Bochy said the team is still deciding on the best option. He would not comment on the state of Cueto's ligament.

"We definitely want to make sure we do the right thing," Bochy said. "I don't think you rule out anything ... it's a matter of putting all our heads together and deciding the type of rehab and what needs to be done."

This does not appear to be as cut-and-dry as many "pitcher's elbow starts hurting" cases. It's possible Cueto will simply need some time off and anti-inflammatories. It's also possible that he'll need Tommy John surgery, costing him at least 12 months of action. Some pitchers in recent years have been able to continue pitching with a torn ligament, and a couple have tried PRP injections to avoid surgery.

Bochy said he should have more after the game. Cueto declined comment until Friday. For now, all the Giants can say definitively is that their hottest pitcher will miss some time, and that leaves a huge hole. Andrew Suarez will slide into the rotation and start Sunday, following Chris Stratton and Ty Blach. Jeff Samardzija and Derek Holland will start Monday and Tuesday in Philadelphia.
