From the very beginning, DeMar DeRozan has defied the odds. DeRozan’s parents never expected to be able to have kids as health issues were supposed to make it nearly impossible. Five years into their marriage, though, DeMar was born. Raised in Compton, California, a neighborhood in Los Angeles known for its history of gangs and drug violence, DeRozan emerged as a basketball star. A top ranked recruit out of Compton High School, DeRozan chose to attend college at the University of Southern California, where after one year he declared for the NBA draft. Now a two-time All-Star, DeRozan, and fellow Team USA star Kyle Lowry, have helped the Raptors become one of the premier teams in the NBA’s Eastern Conference.
