The marriage may be over for Jon and Kate Gosselin, but the show must go on.

The stars of “Jon & Kate Plus 8” confirmed on Monday what has been readily apparent all season: their marriage is beyond repair.

“I’m tired of smiling on the outside and crying on the inside,” Kate said near the end of what TLC billed as a life-altering announcement about their family's future on Monday's episode. “I’ve been doing that for a long time."

“I was too passive," Jon said, sounding like someone who had already moved on. "I went along with everything.”

Kate said she "sob harder than I've ever sobbed" but then decided it was time to move on from her hubby of 10 years, saying the split would have happened even if the couple was not in the limelight.

"I believe it's a chapter that would have played out had the world been watching or not," she said.

Jon said the couple's constant bickering in front of the children was unhealthy and that the pair lived like two strangers under the same roof.

"We don't have anything right now," he said. "It's just like two people who happen to live here. It's just not good for our kids, for us to be arguing in front of our kids. We can't be cordial in front of each other, so we decided to separate."

Production of the show has been halted following the announcement -- and only six of the 40-episode season have aired, Usmagazine.com reported.

Subtitles on a black screen at the end of the episode confirmed that the Gosselins had gone to court Monday to "dissolve" their marriage. They reportedly filed their divorce papers at the Bucks County Courthouse in Doylestown, a source described as "close to the situation" told People.com just hours before the show aired.

Both released statements confirming the split Monday night.

"It's a shame," Jon said. "I will always love her as the mother of my kids."

"Jon & Kate," a chronicle of a young couple raising a set of twins and sextuplets, began on the Discovery Health Channel in 2007, though it became a national phenomenon after moving to TLC. Its season 5 premiere drew a record 9.8 million viewers on May 25. Many have bailed on the show in recent weeks though Monday's episode was heavily hyped.

On Monday, Kate said she wanted to continue filming. Jon was more circumspect because he might have a job offer that conflicts with the filming schedule.

“We have soldiers over in Iraq dying for our country and all (paparazzi) care about is what I ate for lunch,” he said.

Either way, the couple said, the kids would remain in the family’s million dollar Pennsylvania home -- one parent would leave when the other had visitation privileges.

The hour-long special did not directly address rumors of infidelity from both stars.

On the show, their kids were given playhouses for the yard. Their parents did their best to avoid each other.

"It’s very uncomfortable at this point because Jon has anger," Kate said in what have become standard solo confessionals from the family couch. "He won’t talk to me. That’s the truth."

Earlier Monday, Jon seemed to downplay the big announcement.

"Well, today's just another day," he told RadarOnline.com when asked at the grocery store whether he would be glad after the episode aired.

Jon spent Father's Day alone with the twins and set of sextuplets on their sprawling 24-acre estate in Pennsylvania. On Monday, he said he was still had "no idea" of Kate's whereabouts and wasn't happy.

"I've been by myself for four days," he said in the RadarOnline video, adding that he was "down a person" taking care of the kids.

As an alternative to divorce, some had speculated that the couple would decide to enter marriage counseling. That does not seem likely.

Kate first alluded to matrimonial problems in May when she said she doesn't recognize her husband of 10 years.

Jon said he's noticed the changes in himself, too.

"It just got worse and worse and worse, and with all the tabloids and all that, it just made it even worse," Jon said in the episode. "People think I've changed, and I have changed, but I'm now the person I know I am."

The two spent their 10th anniversary apart from one another just 10 days ago, and Jon has reportedly been looking for an apartment in New York City.

Though the family's future remains uncertain, Kate said her relationship -- or lack thereof -- with Jon doesn't change how she feels toward her kids.

"Doesn't matter where Jon and I are in our relationship," Kate said. "My kids still matter the most to me. We haven't really known where we were going, but we've been dealing with this for a long time. A slow progression that has not popped up one day, it's not been like a secret."
