Russell Crowe getting into a fight isn't so surprising, given the volatile actor's phone-throwing, bar-brawling past.

Russell Crowe getting into a fight on Twitter is surprising. And Russell Crowe getting into a fight on Twitter about circumcision? Well, that's just downright bizarre.

The "Robin Hood" actor took to the social media outlet to rant about the ritual of circumcision, calling the practice "barbaric and stupid."

"Is it real that God requires a donation of foreskin? Babies are perfect," he added.

Crowe then reached out to several Jewish acquaintances - including director Eli Roth - asking them to do something to stop the ritual. "I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats, but stop cutting your babies," wrote Crowe. What, exactly, Crowe expected the director of "Hostel" to do about it is unclear.

As followers began inundating the actor with reprimands, the 47 year-old Australian fired back.

"I will always stand for the perfection of babies. I will always believe in God, not man's interpretation of what God requires," said Crowe. "Last of it, if you feel it is your right to cut things off your babies please unfollow and f**k off; I'll take attentive parenting over barbarism."

However, Crowe's belligerence wouldn't last. He returned to Twitter after a short break to apologize for his tirade.

"I have a deep and abiding love for all people of all nationalities," wrote Crowe. "I'm very sorry that I have said things on here that have caused distress. My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry."

Roth, meanwhile, has come to Crowe's defense via Twitter - lambasting the media for taking a joke out of context.

"@THR HOW DARE YOU call @russellcrowe antisemitic? What is WRONG with you? We are FRIENDS. Friends joke and tease each other. This is SICK," Roth wrote, referencing a Hollywood Reporter article.

Roth added: "story using tweets and poisoning a very good person's name. Why do you think no one takes newspapers seriously anymore?"
