Alameda Boy Drowns After Falling Into Canal

Drowning in Contra Costa Canal is second in a week.

A 12-year-old boy who drowned in an Antioch canal while attempting to collect a lost sandal has been identified as Jumai Caldwell of Alameda, according to reports.

The boy was pulled from a water district canal at 4:45 p.m., about two hours after he had fallen in, according to the Contra Costa Times.

Jumai and two friends, including his 10-year old cousin, were playing with rocks and looking for lizards near the water's edge when his sandal fell in. He then slipped into the water when he tried to retrieve the sandal.

Jumai was found about a quarter-mile away from where he fell in, with two feet of "dark water" and a strong current, according to the report.

This was the second death reported at the Contra Costa Canal in a one-week span.
