Big Rig Carrying Wine Coolers Flips on I-880 in Hayward, Ties Up Traffic For 7 Hours

    A big rig carrying a load of wine and wine coolers - specifically big jugs of Carlo Rossi and Fuzzy Naval Bartles & Jaymes - jackknifed on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward early Friday morning, causing a traffic headache for early morning commuters.     A big rig carrying a load of wine and wine coolers - specifically huge jugs of Carlo Rossi and Fuzzy Naval Bartles & Jaymes - jackknifed on southbound Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward early Friday morning, causing a seven-hour traffic headache for early morning commuters.

    The stretch of highway reopned just after 10:30 a.m., following the 3 a.m. accident.

    A total of four vehicles were involved, including a stalled car, a car that hit the stalled car, a vehicle that the big rig, and the big rig, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver of the stalled car was nowhere to be found. A silver car was seen mangled along the highway.

    It's not clear exactly how the rig flipped, according to CHP Officer Whitney Howard, but there is the "possibility that someone did flee the scene." Witnesses told the CHP they thought they saw someone that might be related to the accident leaving the area, Howard said. She added there were a lot of "conflicting" stories.

    Alameda County firefighters said the driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
