Danville councilman Mike Shimansky is in the fight of his life in Southern California after doctors amputated both of his legs below the knee.

Danville officials say Shimansky is in a drug induced coma and is recovering from a bacterial meningitis.

Shimansky has served on the council since 1989

Councilwoman Candace Andersen told the San Jose Mercury news that Shimansky was visiting family in San Diego last week when he came down with flu-like symptoms.

"It's just taken all of us by complete shock. At this point I think we're just waiting to hear what his prognosis is,"  Andersen told the paper.

Anderson said family and friends are optimistic Shimansky will recover.

He is married and has three children.
