An elderly man was shot in the back early Thursday morning in his home in San Leandro and now police are looking for two suspects on the run.

Because the home is in an affluent neighborhood, police are wondering if this was a targeted attack.

“This crime occurred in a quiet neighborhood in San Leandro where any crime is rare,” Lt. Mike Sobek said.

The San Leandro Police Department received a call at about 12:45 a.m. from the home of an elderly couple in the 2100 block of Lakeview Drive. The home had been invaded and robbed and the man had been shot. The caller also said one of the residents of the house may have returned fire and injured a suspect, Sobek said.

Officers surrounded the home, Sobek said, removed the couple and took the man with critical injuries to a nearby hospital.

SWAT officers searched the home and the surrounding areas but did not find anyone, Sobek said. Police said they will be reviewing the neighbors’ surveillance camera for any helpful footage.

Officers are currently looking for at least two men possibly in their 20s.
