Human Ashes Found on Fremont Road, Returned to Relative

Fremont police are used to car break-ins and missing property cases.

What doesn't come up every day is when human remains in the form of ashes are discovered on the side of a road, which were taken during a car burglary.

Fremont police said on Tuesday that a man living at the Creekside Village Apartments called police on Sunday to say he found the box of ashes near Paseo Padre Parkway. The box was labeled with the dead person's name and the crematorium that was used to cremate him.

Police were able to track down a family member and return the ashes. The person told police that earlier in the day, someone had broken into his car in the 37300 block of Sequoia Road and stole the box of ashes. The exact relationship between the two wasn't immediately clear.

Anyone with information about the auto burglary is asked to call Fremont police at 510-790-6800.
