A University of California, Davis, student who was missing in Haiti after a huge earthquake has been found safe, the university said Thursday.

Starry Dawn Sprenkle has been in Haiti helping to plant trees and is working to earn a Ph.D. in ecology.

Sylvia Wright, a university representative, said Spenkle called her father at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

Spenkle had made it to Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, and was reunited with her husband.

Spenkle told her father that she slept outside Wednesday night, since many buildings in the capital are considered unsafe.

Thousands of people are feared dead after the quake, which was said to be magnitude-7.0.
