PR Campaign For the Homeless Underway in SF

Ad campaigns on BART seek to recast homeless people.

The Coalition on Homelessness is sponsoring a new ad campaign in San Francisco public transportation stations aimed at changing the perception of homeless people, according to reports.

The Huffington Post has taken notice of the coalition's effort to remind citizens with homes that their homeless brethren were, in many cases, just like them: hard-working people with jobs and places to live.

And some other uncomfortable facts, including the lack of shelter beds -- there's one bed for every five homeless people in the city)

The ads will feature a marathon runner and an artist, a former Oracle consultant, and other people who make you pause and "think, 'Gee, that's weird. They don't look homeless to me,'" Coalition on Homelessness staffer Matthew Gerring told the Chronicle.

There are 6,436 homeless people in San Francisco, a figure that has stayed steady for about a decade.
