Thieves have hit St. Ignatius Church in Antioch four times this year, usually stealing copper wire – which leaves the church without power hours before worship services.

The church tells the Contra Costa Times, several members of the congregation are now taking turns patrolling the property for thieves during late night and early morning hours.

Antioch police say there’s been a spike in burglaries this year, especially when it comes to copper thefts at churches and schools.

Another Catholic church in Antioch, Most Holy Rosary, is gathering a committee of volunteers to watch over the parking lot during weekend services to deter thieves.
