"World's Fittest Man" Steve Sokol died early Monday when his car struck a pole on Cottle Road, says the Merc.

Sokol, once did 1,000 push-ups in 10 minutes, and rode a bicycle 500 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

"He was the world's fittest man,'' said his mother, Bernice Sokol. "How could this "...'' She could not finish the thought.

Sokol was an accomplished triathlete, cyclist, runner and swimmer. He broke world fitness records, including doing 30,000 jumping jacks in less than eight hours.

He was a "Bachelor of the Month" in a 1986 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine, and went on to work as a trainer for BodyFirm in Los Gatos.

Police say no evidence of drugs or alcohol were found at the scene of the accident, and the autopsy is still pending.

Sokol was 54.
