San Leandro police are searching for a man who violently punched a Safeway manager inside the grocery store.

The attack was reported just before 11 a.m. Monday at the grocery store on 555 Bancroft Ave.

Police said the suspect approached the manager inside the store and for an unknown reason attacked the Safeway employee.

The 51-year-old manager fell to the ground and was seriously injured. The suspect fled the area and was not located by responding officers.

Employees told NBC Bay Area the suspect reported to the manager that his wife had lost her purse in the store. The manager responded by telling him where the store's lost-and-found area is located before he was attacked.

The suspect is described as a black man, about 20 years old, standing approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an athletic build. He was last seen wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans.

Safeway issued the following statement on Tuesday regarding the incident:

We are deeply concerned about our employee, who remains hospitalized. We are rallying around him and his family to offer our assistance and support. We are also working with law enforcement in this matter.
