Santa Clara County Jail Nurses Arrested After Inmate Drugs Stolen

Prescription drugs were stolen from the jail

Two nurses who worked at the Santa Clara County jail have been arrested in connection with taking drugs intended for inmates.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza confirmed on Wednesday that Elmer Alegado, 50, of Lathrop and Rodolfo Idian, 54, of San Jose were taken into custody last week after investigators were tipped off this fall that there was inmate's prescription medication being stolen from the jail. The Mercury New first reported the story.

The investigation is ongoing and Cardoza did not offer many details. The two worked for the county's Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System.

Alegado has since posted bail, and Idian was released on his own recognizance, Cardoza said, which is why he could not provide photographs of them.

NBC Bay Area confirmed that the nurses' lawyer said his clients may have acted negligently, but not criminally.
