Kittens from across the Bay Area escaped from local shelters Thursday afternoon. Their get-away cars? Uber.
Drivers for the online car service chauffeured dozens of kittens around on this National Cat Day. Staff members from offices across the Bay snuggled up with so-called "Uber kittens" from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The annual event raises awareness about shelter animals in need of a permanent home.
"We're bringing these kittens that are up for adoption. So you get 15 minutes of snuggle time, there is a $30 snuggle fee that goes back right into the local shelters, and then those are all up for adoption," said Laura Zapata, Uber spokesperson.
"So a shelter representative is there to kind of walk people through the adoption process if they want to," she said.
This is the third year shelter kittens have traveled around San Francisco. This year the journey expanded to the East Bay, North Bay and South Bay.
"Every day is cat day for us, but for the rest of the community it's a way to bring attention to shelter animals who are great animals, and all they need is a loving home," said Scott Delucchi of the Peninsula Humane Society, where 50 kittens up to six months of age are currently eligible for adoption.

"If someone really falls in love with a kitten they've seen today they can finalize adoption by coming into our center," said Delucchi.
The Peninsula Humane Society is located at 1450 Rollins Road in Burlingame.
