Uptown Oakland Declared One of Country's Best ‘Hoods

From 15th Street to Grand Avenue, the living is good.

Uptown Oakland has been declared one of the best places to live in America by the American Planning Association.

Transit aplenty, great food, a happening jobs scene: Uptown Oakland has everything the APA is looking for in a good neighborhood, the Oakland-based East Bay Express reported. Hence the area's placement in its "Great Places in America" program.

Uptown, of course, has the Fox Theater and the Paramount Theater, as well as city-bought land at 19th Street that became the Uptown Art Park, the newspaper noted.

Oakland and Seattle were the only two West Coast cities to earn nods from the association. Get your act together, San Francisco.

Oakland has also spent a lot of time and effort in getting the neighborhood together: about 14 years of effort that began when Gov. Jerry Brown was Oakland's mayor.
