A 29-year-old woman was gunned down outside a West Oakland market this morning in what a police spokeswoman called "a very brazen act."

The shooting happened at about 10:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of 12th Street, near the Family Market.

Police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said the woman, an Oakland resident, was walking when a man approached her and fired multiple shots at her. She was hit by the gunfire and died at the scene.

Her name has not yet been released. The shooter got into a car described as a silver or gold 1990s Toyota and fled.

He is believed to be a black man in his 20s who was wearing a black jacket, a black beanie and light gray pants, police said.

Police have obtained surveillance video taken in the area this morning and investigators are reviewing it, Watson said.

She said the motive for the shooting is not clear, but that it does not appear the suspect stole anything from the victim.

Watson said the shooting was bold, given that Peralta is a busy street and that there is foot traffic in the area. She said there were "a lot of witnesses" to the shooting and that at least some are cooperating with investigators.

At about 1 p.m. two women stopped by the scene of the shooting and placed candles of various sizes on a memorial that had been created on the sidewalk. With a number of small candles, they spelled out the words "RIP Kim."

Other people had left a balloon, some Easter eggs and a small pillow with the message "baby girl."

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Police Department's major crimes unit at (510) 238-3821 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at (510) 777-8572.
