Driver Hit Bicyclist, Drove Home With Man on Back Window, Then Tried To Dispose of Him: Cops

A driver confessed that he hit a bicyclist, drove home with the man on his back window and tried to dispose of him in a wooded area, police said Tuesday.

The bicyclist, 53-year-old Craig Camlin, is in critical condition at North Broward Medical Center following the Monday morning incident, Fort Lauderdale Police said.

The 27-year-old driver, Axel E. Inostroza, faces several charges, including failure to stop at an accident involving injury and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, and is being held on $70,000 bond in the Broward County Main Jail, online jail records showed. It wasn’t immediately known whether Inostroza has an attorney.

The crash, which police called a hit and run, occurred on the 5200 block of Northeast 18th Ave. on Monday at about 6:30 a.m.

Camlin was heading north on Northeast 18th Ave. when a 2003 black Ford Mustang going the same way struck the rear of his bike with its right front bumper, police said. That caused Camlin to be ejected onto the windshield, roll over the roof and land on the back window, according to police.

“The driver was fully aware of the crash that occurred and did not stop his vehicle,” police said in a news release Tuesday. Instead, he kept heading northbound for about two miles until he reached his home in Pompano Beach, police said.

That’s when he picked up Camlin and attempted to dispose of him in a wooded area – but a few hours later a landscape crew found Camlin and called 911, police said.

That afternoon, Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies from Pompano Beach made contact with a man who was attempting to get work done on his vehicle at a body shop. The damage the deputies saw was similar to the damage involved in the Fort Lauderdale crash, and the deputies immediately contacted Fort Lauderdale Police traffic homicide investigators, police said.

When the investigators contacted the driver, Inostroza, he gave them a full confession, police said.

Police said they continue to investigate, and urge anyone who witnessed the crash to call traffic homicide investigator Jill Hirsch at 954-828-5753.
