Greg Cosell Praises Derek Carr, But Also Suggests Caution

Derek Carr was just named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Week.

Last Sunday, he became the third quarterback in NFL history to rack up ast least 400 yards and four touchdowns in a game without throwing an interception.

"I thought that the game he played this past week may have been the best game I've seen him play," Greg Cosell told KNBR 680 on Wednesday morning. "It started from the waste down. He was really settled in the pocket and he threw on balance with clean footwork.

"That's been a continuing issue with him throughout his first 2.5 years in the league. There are times he gets a little erratic just because his lower-body mechanics don't function properly and he would miss throws that he should make.

"But this week, I thought he played the best game that I've seen him play, and I imagine I've seen just about all of them on tape."

Through eight games, Carr has put himself in the MVP discussion.

He's fifth in the league in passing yards (2,321) and passer rating (100.9), and tied for third in touchdowns (17).

The 2014 second-round pick has thrown just three interceptions and the Raiders are 6-2. But Cosell isn't completely sold yet.

"We'll have to wait and see how that continues because certainly they played a team this week that did not have a very good pass rush, and that certainly helped considerably," Cosell added. "But I thought Carr was really disciplined in the pocket this week."

Up next for Carr and the Raiders: A Sunday Night Football showdown against the 6-2 Broncos, who boast one of the best defenses in football.
