”Jersey Shore” Premiere Shatters MTV Records

8.8 million people tuned in to watch Snooki and the gang go wild in Italy.

MTV execs must be doing some serious fist pumps right now.

The season 4 premiere of "Jersey Shore" shattered MTV records, with 8.8 million people tuning in to watch Snooki and the gang go wild in Italy, according to Nielsen ratings.

The hour-long extravaganza also drew an 8.2 rating in the 12-34 demographic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Reuters reports the episode bumped down "Jersey Shore"'s last premiere, which debuted in January 2011.

What crazy shenanigans went down in the Italian homeland to attract so many people? Well, Pauly D was planning an "international panty raid," and breaking news emerged that Snooki and the Situation may be "smushing." And as always, there was plenty of bronzer and hair gel to go around.

While the show broke records for the most-watched premiere, it isn't MTV's most-watched episode. That trophy would go to a season three show in which Snooki got arrested (8.9 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter).
