Explosive Found in San Jose Home

San Jose police have secured a home where officers serving a  search warrant Thursday found dynamite and blasting caps, prompting the  evacuation of surrounding residences, a police spokesman said.

Police received a call around 10:45 a.m. from Los Altos police  requesting assistance in serving a search and arrest warrant at a home in the  1700 block of Wyrick Avenue for a theft and burglary suspect, police Officer  Enrique Garcia said.

Officers had information that the suspect had weapons registered  to him and was under a domestic violence restraining order, Garcia said.

After taking the suspect into custody at his home on Wyrick  Avenue, investigators found several sticks of dynamite and blasting caps  inside the residence.

The discovery prompted the closure of Wyrick Avenue and the  evacuation of residences in the neighborhood, Garcia said.

A bomb squad responded and managed to secure the scene around 8:15  p.m.

Garcia said officers dug a whole in the ground and burned the  dynamite, which did not create an explosion.

Wyrick Avenue has since reopened and residents have been allowed  to return to their homes, Garcia said.
