Ring in the Charger in 2012

If someone gave you a dollar for every cell phone charger you own, how rich would you be?

It's actually a legitimate question considering almost every phone uses a different charger. But that's about to change.

Cell phone makers pledged on Tuesday to create a universal charger for handsets -- by 2012, CNN.com reports. That means your Blackberry, iPhone, and Motorola can all rejuice with the same device, a proposed micro USB plug.

Not only is this awesome (to put it in one word,) but it's actually good for the environment. The new device would reportedly reduce raw materials and decrease the amount of greenhouse gases produced during manufacturing.

It is estimated that between 51,000 and 82,000 metric tons of handset chargers were sold last year, according to CNN.com and University of Southern Queensland data reported by the GSMA (Groupe Speciale Mobile Association). If the plan goes through, it looks like that number will be slashed.

Soon you'll be able to spend less time fiddling with different chargers for your phone, and more time talking on it. Isn't that what we all need?
