Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger joined officials from the University of California, San Francisco late this morning to announce a $25 million gift from the state's largest private donors to stem cell research.
The donation is from the Los Angeles-based charitable foundation of Eli and Edythe Broad. In turn, the university's stem cell center will be renamed the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF.
Eli Broad is a former executive in the home-building industry.
Through their foundation, he and his wife have given a combined $75 million to stem cell programs at the University of California's San Francisco and Los Angeles campuses, and the University of Southern California, according to UCSF.
