Teenage Suspect Escapes During Transfer at SJ Airport

17-year-old faces burglary charges, probation violation

A 17-year-old boy who was being extradited to Wyoming to face burglary charges escaped custody early Tuesday morning at Mineta San Jose  International Airport, San Jose police said.

The boy, who was also wanted for a probation violation, was in the custody of the private company U.S. Extradition Service, Inc., when he  managed to break free and disappear, San Jose police Officer Enrique Garcia said.

Garcia said the company contacted San Jose police for assistance around 5:30 a.m.

Airport spokesman David Vossbrink said the escape happened in an airport parking lot. "What I've heard is that he got loose in our short-term parking lot next to Terminal C," Vossbrnk said.

He said the boy likely ran across Airport Boulevard and headed toward the nearby Guadalupe River.

A representative of the Texas-based extradition company said around 7:30 a.m. he was still getting details on the escape.

"The agent was escorting the juvenile to do an air transport to a destination and he bolted at the airport," said Bill Brees, the company's  director of marketing and operations support.

Garcia said the search has been called off.

Airport operations were not affected by the incident, Vossbrink  said.
