Woman, 50, is Pioneering Transsexual Basketball Player

Gabrielle Ludwing coud be first person to compete in athletics for both genders

College basketball is nothing new for Gabrielle Ludwig, who has played on both women's and men's teams.

Ludwig, 50, is a transsexual woman who has been the focus of national print and broadcast media attention, according to the Contra Costa Times. A "blitz" of reporters, including NBC Bay Area, were on hand Saturday to watch the 6-foot-8 Fremont resident play in Mission College's 103-58 win on Saturday afternoon.

Ludwig, who played junior college basketball for Nassau College 30 years ago, is a Desert Storm veteran who had a sex change operation in July.

It is believed she is the first person to compete in collegiate athletics for teams of both genders.
