Redwood City Charter School Evacuated Due to SWAT Activity

Students are being allowed back into Summit Preparatory Charter High School in Redwood City after it was evacuated Monday morning due to SWAT activity, police said.

Police are investigating a safety incident at the school, located at 890 Broadway, according to Deputy Police Chief Kirby. The school was evacuated based on a 9-1-1 call, he said, adding that there was no confirmed gunman or shooting or injuries to report.

One person was treated for anxiety symptoms at the school and this is unrelated to the police investigation.

The investigation resulted in the closure of southbound Broadway between Woodside Road and Mills Way for a while, Kirby said.

Joe Witherspoon with Motostrano, a bicycle and motorcycle shop at 926 Broadway, said around 11:10 a.m. that police had shut down the intersection in front of the school and that officers had pointed guns and rifles at the school campus. "They're evacuating students with their hands in the air," Witherspoon said. "It's kind of scary."
