Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Man Near Fairgrounds in San Jose

The man's death marks San Jose's 32nd traffic fatality of 2014.

San Jose police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision early Friday morning where a vehicle struck a pedestrian near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, police said.

At 12:13 a.m., the Police Department's 911-dispatch center received word of a male who was down in Senter Road beside a neighborhood near Baltic Avenue, according to Officer Albert Morales.

Officers located the stricken man lying in the street and he pronounced dead a short time later at the scene, police said.

The driver of the vehicle that had struck him had already sped away from the area, Morales reported.
From a preliminary investigation by the department's traffic investigations unit, the male pedestrian was apparently crossing Senter heading east from the intersection with Baltic, police said.

The vehicle then struck him in a southbound lane on Senter, Morales said.

Police are trying to determine whether other vehicles struck him as he lay on Senter, according to Morales.

A witness told police that one vehicle that might have come in contact with the victim was a dark-colored SUV, he said.

The man's death was the 32nd traffic fatality in San Jose in 2014, he said.
