Judge Allows Oakland Charter Schools to Stay Open

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A judge has allowed three of California's highest-performing public schools to remain open, as they fight the Oakland school board's decision to close them following allegations of financial mismanagement and fraud.

Alameda County Judge Evelio Grillo granted a temporary restraining order on Thursday keeping the American Indian Model Schools open at least through the first few weeks of their summer school, which starts on June 20.

The Oakland School Board voted in March to shutter the charter schools at the end of June after a state audit found financial conflicts of interest, serious lapses in administrative oversight and $3.8 million in questionable payments to companies controlled by founder Ben Chavis and his wife.

The charter school is expected to appeal the board's decision before the Alameda County Board of Education on June 25.
