Lost Tortoise Found Wandering City Street

Tortoise appeared to be in good health and had been well cared for

Do you know anyone who is missing a 26-pound tortoise?

If so, have them call San Francisco's Animal Care and Control.

Animal Care and Control officers said they picked up healthy African tortoise in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley neighborhood Thursday morning after it was found wandering along Campbell Street.

It's legal to have the animal, but the African tortoise is considered endangered.

Animal Care and Control officers said it isn't unusual for tortoises to escape.

They like being outside in the sun, so the owners leave them in the backyard.

The tortoise then digs its way out under a fence.

The African tortoise can live for decades and can weigh as much as 100 pounds, so this one is actually a little guy.

The photo to the right was taken of the animal today after it was brought to the Animal Care and Control facility at 15th and Harrison
