Mother Also Dies Following Violent Fremont Crash

Witnesses said driver of car was speeding and lost control before slamming into tree

A second person has died following a horrific car crash on the streets of Fremont.

Fremont police told NBC Bay Area that 31-year-old Joie Gil died Wednesday afternoon. Her son Angelo was also killed in a single vehicle crash that split their car in two after it crashed along Paseo Padre Parkway.

Police said the family was from Milpitas on their way to a water park.

Fremont police said they are still investigating the crash and say there may be filed against the driver.

Witnesses said the car, which was being driven by 34-year-old Gilbert Gil, was speeding down Paseo Padre Parkway between Chadbourne Drive and Dorne Place just before 1 p.m. They said the driver lost control and crashed into a tree.

Some people on the scene estimated his speed at between 90 and 100 mph.

Joie Gil was in the front passenger seat.

Helicopter video from above the scene showed the front portion of the car in the street and the back portion spread across the frontyard of a home under construction.

Police said the child was restrained in the back seat but was ejected when the car split in half. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gilbert Gil was also ejected and suffered major injuries, while his wife Joie was critically injured and had to be extricated from the car by firefighters, police spokesman Geneva Bosques told Bay City News.

She did not survive.

Paseo Padre Parkway was closed in both directions for seven hours.
